Why Supplements Can Help
There is great debate as to whether supplements are
necessary to optimize health, athletic performance, and body building capacity. The
National Research Council, which established the Recommended Dietary Allowances, and many
physicians and dieticians believe that adequate amounts of nutrients are obtained from
eating a well-balanced diet. Only a small percentage of individuals, however, maintain a
sufficient diet. Hectic schedules, poor meal planning, and a lack of knowledge concerning
the body's nutritional needs all contribute to the demise of the well-balanced diet.
In addition to these more common barriers to sound
nutrition, there are numerous other reasons why supplements should be an essential part of
our lives. Let's make the assumption that you are eating several meals each day which
include all the essential food groups. Consider that since the 1960s farmers have become
increasingly dependent on the use of fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and
potassium. Each successive crop further reduces the various supply of nutrients in the
soil only to be replaced by those provided by the fertilizers. Fertilizers will yield
wonderful and marketable produce, however, the insufficient soil nutrient levels produce
nutrient-deficient fruits, vegetables, and grains. The processing, ripening, storage, and
transportation of food all contribute to the further depletion of vital vitamins and
minerals. Animal breeders have made supplementation a way of life. They supplement the
diets of their livestock because they know that food alone provides a deficient end to
their means. Cooking further destroys or reduces the meager remnants of nutrients in the
foods that finally reach our table.
Aging diminishes the body's ability to obtain and optimally
utilize the nutrients in foods. As we get older we slowly lose our ability to produce or
maintain muscle tissue. Subsequently, there is less necessity for the amount of food we
once required to meet the energy demands of our youth. Less food intake results in a
reduced supply of essential nutrients to the body at a time when you may require more.
When vital nutrients are not obtained on a consistent basis, the body will become
unhealthy and experience numerous ailments and other stressful conditions.
In addition to these important concerns, amateur and
professional athletes and sports active individuals have far more complex supplementation
needs than the average person. The Recommended Dietary Allowances make no concession for
the requirements imposed upon the body by exercise. The additional maintenance, body
building, and fueling nutrients required by high performance athletes demands exceptional
adherence to details that the conventional "three squares a day" program will
not provide. This brief discussion should make you realize that dietary supplements, when
used properly, are an absolute necessity--for everyone.
